Shakespeare 1 (Period 3)
Assignment Calendar
Course Description
Shakespeare 1 is an English 12 elective at VHS. We will cover 4 - 5 of Shakespeare's plays during the semester which most likely will include Taming of the Shrew, The Merchant of Venice, Twelfth Night, Macbeth and Hamlet. Most of the plays are read aloud during class time, but all students are required to pre-read the sections of the plays that we will eventually cover in class. Each play will also have a corresponding essay, so reading AND writing are essential components of the class. The most important element of Shakespeare 1 is finding RELEVANCE in each of these plays. Although all of the plays were written over four hundred years ago, what parallels can we make to our own contemporary society? How do we RELATE to the plays? How do the plays relate to YOU?
There are many extra credit opportunities available for Shakespeare 1 students. Shakespeare meant for his plays to be performed as LIVE THEATRE. Therefore, the more plays each student attends, the more experience they get in understanding the concepts and conventions of the theatre. Students can get extra credit for attending professional theatre, but also for the play productions we do here at the VHS Theater. Therefore, below is the LINK to our VHS Theatre Arts program for the entire school year:
